The draft character introduction for my upcoming open-world gamebook
A Character with a Community and an Adventurous Fate
As covered in Defining the Character, the protagonist (your character) for my upcoming open-world gamebook is pretty open. Might be human, might not. Could be a warrior, a hunter, a bard, a rogue or a witch.
The things they'll have in common are...
- They have a community
- They lead an eventful life where things happen to you.
The Background / Introduction...
Misfit. Touched. Strange.
Most people can do go about everyday tasks without problem. Go for a walk, buy some bread, work a day in the fields, go into market and buy the three things they need.
But you're someone different. You wander into situations and things happen to you. You go for a walk and a dog steals a shoe. You buy some bread and it's got a shilling inside. You work a day in the fields and a traveller will try to have an hour-long conversation.
Going into market... is an adventure unto itself. If you go to the market to buy a chicken, you'll come back with two pigs and a fish, or a dog will steal your chicken, or you'll go missing for 2 days and be found under a bush with vague memories.
Cursed. Blessed. Fated.
You've got multiple scars, broken and healed bones, bruises and old injuries. On the plus side, you heal quickly. People tell you a boring story and you’re jealous. You dream of a day where nothing happened. A day without wasps chasing you, getting milk mixed up with another liquid, slipping on shoes, winning something in a contest you never even entered or having a secret admirer.
Woe betide you if you go on a journey or try something important. Then things get strange. Or dangerous. Or both.
Catalyst. Wanderer. Adventurer.
But that time has come again. Your dreams have been vivid, and it's time to face them and forge a destiny of your own making.
At least that's what you tell yourself.
Today you went to meet a friend chased a goat, and ended up lost in some woods. You've wandered the afternoon, it's starting to get dark, and you've a feeling you've entered a place you don't want to...
Finishing Up
Will need a few edits before seeing print, but give's an idea of the character!
