A guide to the tools and generators for creating and fleshing out D&D Player-Characters and Non-Player Characters
PC Names and Creation
Often the hardest part is a name, and Fantasy Name Generators has names by DnD race. EN World's most popular generator is also a 5E Name Generator and I've created an updated version which races from other 5E books.
For a character in a hurry then fast character gives a full character sheet. You can specify race, class, level and more.
If you're not sure what character to make try the Random Character Generator which gives race, class, background, name, age , bonds and more. For a different take there is a DM's Guild supplement that gives you random tables for choosing your character with most official 5E supplements.
And every character needs a choice of trinkets.
For a Detailed NPC
A great place to start is an NPC tool at TotalPartyKill which gives stats, skills and personality traits. The NPC Generator has traits, a plot hook, physical features and religion. And lots of opportunity for customisation.
For a more stat block with a templated approach rpgTinker will let you customise by NPC type, race and attribute array. Templates include combat, spellcaster and non-combat options.
If you prefer a random table DriveThruRPG has a free pdf of d100 NPCs with appearance, backstory, plot hook and suggested stats.
Lastly, to give a group of PCs a helping hand create a hireling.
For Multiple NPCs
EN World's 2nd most popular generator, the D&D 5e NPC Generator uses tables from the Dungeon Master's Guide and has several options to filter by.
Lastly you might want a group of adventurers as rivals, allies, mentors or foes.
